Timber Inventory Services

The management of any enterprise, whether it is a large company, a family picnic, or a woodlot, can be described as a basic three-step process. First, set a clear and achievable goal or objective. Second, develop a plan to reach that goal or objective. And third, execute your plan.

Unfortunately for some, the last step in this process is sometimes taken first. Action is sometimes taken when purchasing or managing timberland without a clear idea of what is to be achieved in the end or what it may take to get there. The result is usually a frustrating experience that leads to disappointing results, and in the long run wastes time, money, and effort. Actions taken when managing timberland must be directed by clearly defined objectives that are founded on good information.

In the valuation and management of timber and timberland, conducting an inventory of the timber resource should be the first step. Clear and achievable objectives cannot be developed without good inventory data. An inventory provides information on the composition, quality, and quantity of timber and other selected aspects of the property. Unfortunately for the individual or company planning on investing in and or managing timberland, trees are not sorted on a warehouse shelf with stamped on price tags. Accounting for the value and condition of a tract or stand of timber requires a significant amount of expertise and preparation.

FORECON, Inc. specializes in providing our clients with customized inventory solutions to match any project. Each inventory project presents its own unique requirements. Short time frames, fixed budgets, unique local market standards, forest certification requirements, detailed product accounting, stratafication, target population dynamics, statistical targets, and data management concerns, are good examples of some of the factors that drive a forest inventory system design. Developing a system that balances all the factors unique to your inventory and that can be achieved within the target costs and deadlines is something we take great pride in. In addition to maintaining a well-trained qualified staff, FORECON, Inc. employs a variety of forestry software packages and other digital technology such as data recorders, GPS, and GIS to execute an inventory depending on the requirements. Also, our inventory quality assurance system includes not only a rigorous field audit of all personnel involved in data collection, but also includes a series of checks and balances in the processing of data and reports at the office before reports are presented to the client(s).

FORECON, Inc. is very experienced in providing these services throughout the eastern US with hundreds of thousands of acres completed in the last 10 years.
