Staff Forester – Cortland, NY

Principal Duties:

  • Support the Regional Office Manager and work effectively with staff and clients in all aspects of regional operations.
  • Lead, lay out, design, and be responsible for vegetation management, inventory, timber sale, and conservation projects as assigned. And, make on-site decisions to accomplish project goals in adverse or unexpected conditions.
  • Lead, train, and develop seasonal teammates and less tenured staff.
  • Willing and able to obtain a New York pesticide applicator license within 12 months.
  • Design and write forest management plans.
  • Process, compile, and audit inventory data as needed.
  • Act as liaison to municipal and not-for-profit clients (public speaking required).
  • Monitor timber sales periodically for contract compliance, and prepare permits for timber harvest plans as needed. And, ensure compliance with applicable environmental and other applicable regulations.
  • Consistently demonstrate courtesy, professionalism, and effectiveness with coworkers, company managers, and clients.
  • Respect confidentiality of client information, and remain free from conflicts of interest.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

 

Principle Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, Resources Management, or closely related field.
  • Three (3) + years of practical field experience preferred.
  • Must be competent in forest mensuration techniques including point sample, plot and 100% inventory methods, and also knowledgeable of silvicultural forest management practices, both even-aged and un-even-aged.
  • Must be able to work alone and with large groups, able to walk and stand for long periods of time, and able to lift/carry items/equipment weighing 40 lbs. or less.
  • Must have full mobility and use of arms, legs, hands and fingers to perform work outdoors in all types of weather and terrain.
  • Must be self-motivated, and have strong listening skills, and communication skills, both written and oral in English.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Excel, Word, and Access and the ability to use forestry data processing programs are required.
  • Ability and willingness to work out of town as assigned for 1-2 week time periods.
  • Knowledge of Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) preferred, but not required.

Position Type: Full-time

Starting Compensation: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications; paid over-time.
