There are multiple factors, often occurring at the same time, affecting the health and diversity of our timberland forests: from insects and deer, to viral and fungal pathogens, our forests incur and adapt to various biological and environmental stresses.

As we continue to wade through the current trade talks/tariff issues between the US and other nations – particularly China as related to our US hardwood exports, we thought it’d be interesting to show how demand for various hardwood products has changed over the period from 2010 through 2018 (numbers for 2018 have been annualized from mid-year totals).

Well, I guess in some ways we are still “waiting and seeing” how the continuing trade/tariff issues will affect our hardwood logs and lumber markets. 

We’ve seen some definite shifts in demand and consequently value for several of our most popular hardwood species over the last couple of months.

We have always been blessed to have the species and quality of timber that we do in our region (Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia). 

Several hardwood species have seen some downward lumber price movement since our Market Update several weeks ago. 

Though very recent news is saying that hardwood markets are throttling back a little, we have seen continued success for our clients using the competitive bid sale process to sell their timber. 

The summer months have seen steady market demand so far  for hardwood timber across the Appalachian Region of the US. 

The hardwood markets remain strong for quality timber, and we continue to successfully market and sell our clients’ timber through our competitive bid sale procedure.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (there’s an analogy from the past….!), lumber, log and stumpage prices continue to remain strong into the mid-spring months.
