After taking a week off from reporting, we can report continuing active movement in the lumber markets for the key species of interest.

FORECON recently attended the annual Forest Landowners Association’s National Conference in Asheville, North Carolina where hundreds of participants from across the country gathered to understand and talk about the various issues and opportunities that are currently affecting forest landowners. 

With every spring comes a yellow dust that coats our homes, our cars, and for some, the cause of our seasonal allergies. While this may seem like an annoyance for we humans, for trees it is a crucial springtime ritual.

Steady sales continue to be reported in general across the country, and concentration yards are clocking consistent demand from both export and domestic markets. 

Wet weather conditions continued to have an effect on log supply as quite a few mills across the region reported lower log supply due to restrictions on removing stumpage from the woods.

“Steady as she goes” are the comments in general for hardwood lumber markets over this past week. 

Job numbers reports were well above expectations in May, and though domestic demand for hardwood seems to have steadied, Chinese demand continues to increase. 

Though new home sales declined slightly in April as had been expected, projections are that sales will otherwise increase over the course of the coming year, boding well in general for the hardwood industry. 

Appalachian hardwood markets continue to remain strong and vibrant, steady from last week’s reporting, as Chinese demand continues as does interest from other international and certainly domestic markets.
